Hypothyroidism
Thyroid Hormone (TH), often referred to as the body’s major metabolic hormone, is actually two active iodine-containing hormones, thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Thyroxine is the major hormone secreted by the thyroid follicles.
Except for the adult brain, spleen, testes, uterus, and the thyroid gland itself, thyroid hormone affects virtually every cell in the body. Generally speaking, it stimulates enzymes concerned with glucose oxidation. In this way, it increases Basal Metabolic Rate and body heat production.
When the body is not producing enough thyroid hormone, it is known as Hypothyroidism. Symptoms of this can include low metabolic rate, which in turn can lead to weight gain and lethargy, feeling chilled, constipation, thick dry skin, puffy eyes and mental sluggishness.
Most patience with this problem will take thyroxin so that the body still thinks that it is producing enough for everyday activities. Also it is suggested to take a type of Iodine supplement, preferably organic.
As stated earlier in this article, one of the affects is weight gain due to a lower metabolic rate. In previous newsletters we have touched on the fact that exercise and eating regularly can increase your metabolic rate and therefore help in weight loss. This is definitely still the case even with Hypothyroidism. So don’t let this little problem get in the way of your healthy lifestyle. -Michael
